Arrival is the soundtrack for the big, bad end that Ronald Reagan and Jerry Falwell and all those God fearing right wingers warned us was about to happen, what with our wicked ways and all. The sky cracks open, and some giant winged devil beast bursts out of the clouds with a legion of diseased skeleton soldiers behind him, riding black leather stallions belching fire, and they descend in a storm of locusts and vampire bats, seizing upon the hapless citizens in a rampage of shrieking, blitzkrieg murder, laying waste to everyone and everything, until there's nothing but an empty dry husk slowly rotating under an unblinking sun. That's what these Finnish epic black metal motherfuckers sound like, the end of the whole goddamned world. Which I imagine is exactly what they were going for, so you know, bravo, Arrival. "An Abstract of Inertia" is also good value for your black metal dollar, as it appears to be about 3 hours long. I popped this in somewhere just outside of Hartford, Connecticut, and it was only on track 6 when I got back to Boston, and that's even with the extra time it took to dodge all the fireballs and pitchforks raining down from the sky.
