Awesome Machine - Under the Influence

"Sounds like Kyuss." I think I’ve written that line in the year and half we’ve been spreading the heavy gospel in these pages more times than I’ve drunkenly fallen down a flight of stairs in the last decade- and believe me, that was more than several. To be honest, I’m still not sure why Kyuss have garnered such slathering devotion from an army of Scandinavian satellite bands in the first place. All they seem to have done is drag a generator into the desert and stretch out 20 year old blues metal riffs to their breaking point. That, and they revolutionized a very ginchy slacker fashion full of corduroys and sneakers, making it impossible for Roadsaw to continue buying their clothes from the Lip Service catalogue. For whatever reason, Awesome Machine were perhaps the closest cousins to Kyuss ever, aping them note for stoner note in the earlier days. However, somewhere in the last two years, the band has tinkered with the circuitry, yanked out the desert rock wires, and polished their sound into a fully equipped, finely honed, shiny new Awesome Machine, running on pure fossil fuel- Deep Purple’s Hammond drenched proto-metal and the bluesy fuzz buzz crunch of Mountain. And if that sounds eerily like the Spiritual Beggars to you, well I never said the Awesome Machine were any more original, just better. Don’t ask if this machine’s full of used parts, baby, just strap it on and enjoy the ride.
