Back Scatter is one of those labels that requires a lot of slashes and dashes- you know, electro dash industrial slash ambient dash voodoo-jazzedelic-synthcore pop. Their name also freakes me out, for some reason. I don't know what 'Back Scatter' means, but it's got to have something to do with either flame throwers and military operations, or German porn. Whatever the name's about, Back Scatter the label digs through the murky synth warrior underground in a dogged pursuit of the New Strangeness, and this compilation is a double CDR of what they've found. Although styles range from disco to just this side of power noise, for the most part, fans of Skinny Puppy will find a great many of their litter running wild here. Lots of distorted vocals, eerie samples, and heavy ass industrial dance beats abound, with cinematic flourish and evil intent. Stand outs include Hollow's "A Stale Place", which begins with machine gunning hardcore techno beats and ends up in a crawl of horror symphonics and lizard hissing, the possessed radar signal bleep orgy of Horrific Digit Tattoo's "Intensive Scare", the robot disco dance drone of Fervid Torper's "Breeding to Death", and the breezy goth-girl luxuriance of The Kingdom's "Her So Called Solace". A few of the tracks fail to nail the proper neurons, but those are mostly the Depeche Mode rip-offs anyway. If you're looking for what's happening in the post-industrial world of menacing machines and their death disco masters, Back Scatter is a great place to find out, and even if you're hip to what's currently bubbling in the synth pool, most of these acts are so obscure you're sure to find something new here.
