As
the name so ably illustrates, Adolf and the boys are Atlanta based
troublemakers who are so punk, I’m surprised this one didn’t show up with a
Doc Marten bootprint embedded on the CD. This is a collection of tracks
recorded ‘tween ’99 and 2002, and I gotta say, despite expecting nothing but
riot-riot chants and re-hashed Angelic Upstarts riffs, The Piss
Artists have seriously impressed me. The guitars are credited to at
least three short-hairs – Chet Knight, Warren Bailey, and (I’m
assuming) his brother Ollie Bailey, and at least one ‘em is a
monster axe handler. This is POWER punk, forceful and aggro and right
on the fuckin’ money. If you listen really close, you’ll notice that most of
the riffs coulda been cribbed right from a Judas Priest tablature
book, only they’re pushed through dirty heaving amps at three times the
speed. The Piss Artists also know how to rock n’ roll. They’re not
particularly inclined to, cuz they’re too busy smashing the state or
whatever street punks like to smash, but there’s steam rising off some of
the nasty-assed grooves on these songs. Dig the utterly right on “We
Don’t Pose”, or the positively punk n’ rollin’ “For Adolfs Only”
for proof. There’s plenty of standard fighting music, too- “Abrasive Punk”,
“Tomorrow’s Empire”, “Kill or Incarcerate”, etc. – so if yr in
the mood to bust someone’s nose, then you got that going for ya, too. I’m
not about to buy a t-shirt or nothin’, but on the strength of these tracks,
I’d say that Adolf and the Piss Artists were one of the best
roughneck punk bands out there. These days, Chet’s dropped the rest of the
Piss Artists and hooked up with an entirely new gang of savages. They’re
calling themselves the simpler, less punch-baiting APA now, but the
punk punks on. “Hate Generator” is a fond farewell to the band that
was, and it rocks. Say Oi, somebody.
