High
concept to the moon, this record scores about 5 billion bonus points just
for the sheer audacity of it's existence. Opium Jukebox are a liquid gang
of post-industrial super groupers- Martin Atkins is the mastermind behind
this one- teaming up with traditional Indian musicians to record
Sitar-heavy Bollywood exotica versions of Sex Pistols songs. As you can
imagine, it's quite insane, and as such, you'd have to have the patience
and outer space ears of an obsessed mental patient to really hear the
Pistols tunes behind the shuffling hi-hats and twanging sitar and Hari
Krishna bell ringing. Reminds me of that time at the Cafe Casablanca when
they swore it was nothing but banana flavored tobacco in the hookah, and I
ended up getting chased by a six armed Captain America every time I walked
down the street for a week. Seriously hallucinogenic, "Never Mind the
Bhangra" is much more entertaining than yet another collection of
badly recorded Sex Pistols demos, so skip the 14th botched take of
"Anarchy in the UK" and try this lunacy in Kashmir instead.
