Brit scuzz metal anti-heroes Orange Goblin have one of the best names in rock and roll and one of the worst reputations. Just about everyone I know has either toured with them, scored drugs from or for them, or fucked or got fucked by the almighty Goblin, and none of them have been the same since. So, obviously, they've got a lot to live up to. Although many people thought their last album, 2000's "The Big Black", was the absolute tits, I have to admit I was pretty underwhelmed by it's redneck Sabbath boogie sludge, figuring their appeal had more to with the big breasted chicks that adorn their album covers than the rawk within. Something happened from there to here, though, because Orange Goblin have given up the turgid stoner rock leanings- and the naked chicks, even- and on "Coup De Grace", the action is all about rip snorting biker metal, pure muscle rock that still maintains a tab or two of molten Altamont psychedelia, but mostly pays homage to their hometurf legacy of denim and leather riff merchants. Just as tough as Scissorfight and with the same penchant for seriously dangerous bouts of Getting Down, on "CDG", the Goblin are all about no nonsense, heads down metal chug. Kyuss still looms large of course, with Scott Reeder producing the album and John Garcia laying his signature drug soul brother vox on a track, but the original desert rockers are there more for support than influence. I do miss the tits, even with the boss EC inspired axe wielding ghoul on the cover, but otherwise I am totally down with Orange Goblin's new crazy motorcycle revolution. I still wouldn't let them anywhere near my wallet or my woman, though.
