Swirling psychedelia and Britpop beats rule the day here, so you don't even have to check the credits to know that a (defrocked- like all of 'em, eventually) member of Brian Jonestown Massacre is at the root of the Snakes. Lenny Pops is the man with the cool name, the rattlin', bojangle guitar and the Dylan-esque drawl, and he and his reptile clan have constructed a classic droll n' roll record here that will quite happily bring to mind Hurricane #1, Superdrag, JAMC, and other disciples of hipster fuzz-pop. Every teeming metropolis has a "Coolest band in town"- you know, with the cat that's got the moptop and the white shoes, who shakes around that gourd thing with the beans inside, and sings that one song that makes the chicks go absolutely nuts? They'll be the ones opening up for the Snakes. 'Evil 8' is groovy, Tuesday.
