"AS&CD" looks for all the world like something you'd get from a vending machine in Tokyo- I would not have been surprised at all if some polka-dotted shoolgirl panties dropped out of the jewel case when I first cracked it open- but inside, it's all American, baby, as red, white and blue as French fries, Swedish bikini teams, or Columbian neckties. The beauty of this cunning stunt is it's chameleon-like qualities. Although there is no doubt who's party it is you're crashing, you can probably name just about any one of your favorite bands, and they'll be in the mix somewhere. "Hong Kong Blonde" sounds as much like the Cars as it does Faster Pussycat, "Blow Rock Honey" channels the swirly acid-pop of Jesus and the Mary Chain and the Cult's arena rock riffing in equal measure, and every heavy player in the hipster rock mythos, both real and imaginary, from Ziggy Stardust to Zodiac
Mindwarp, is given the big neon hi-five someplace here. It's like a series of funhouse mirrors that make you look both crazy and cool from any angle. But for simplicity's sake, Queer For Girls are space age cock rockers with million dollar riffs and the hooks to cash the paychecks. Bands like QFG make it abundantly clear why rock and roll has endured through the years- when it's this good, it's better than sex or drugs- even the cartoon and android varieties.
