Blink 182's roughshod scummy older cousins anyone? Now if I read that as an opener for a review it wouldn't be heralding much. And if I was a scientist (imagine Johnny Cash and June Carter singing that), especially a Swiss one then i'd be thinking of altering the gene pool in a fairly significant way. But worry not as this'll probably be short and swift as going on the sleeve notes I'm hopelessly humourless and maybe even clinically dead. See I'm not really on this kinda frat boy goofball doofus trip at all and it's not helped by this being way way overly long at 78 minutes or something. I'd be bordering on getting bored of Maria McKee at that point and she's fucking genius AND cute. Well, maybe not but point made, oui? These guys missed their boat too as a few years later than this mid 90's sludge of Green Day / Buzzcocksy punky power pop they'd be the perfect soundtrack for Jackass, along with bloody Andrew WK. Y'know, if that's your bag so be it you might love em. Out of the trough tho there are a few highlights (throw enuff shit an' all) faintly glimmering like an old gas lamp in a gale such as the Ramonesyfied Eddie Cochran blitz of My Girl Left Me For A Chick (but it still don't beat 44 Double D's take on a similar theme with their Oooh Yeah ie "thank god she left me for her lesbian lover"), Copperhead Penny - which is now so good that I can't recall anything of note about it - and Stupid Head ("Hey Stupid I'm in love with you / I think you're kinda cute / I'm stupid too", hmmm.). Best line of all tho is this from Letters and Numbers - "Saturday night I hope you're fine, better than me, so I don't feel guilty." |
